The people of of Polemi consider the tulip to be one of the prettiest flowers in the world. Near the village grow unique wild varieties of the tulips - Toulipa and Tulipa Agenensis. They are distinguished by an unusual elongated shape of the petals and the original color - bright red, with a black spot in the center, surrounded by a yellow border. Such tulips are also called sun-eyed flowers - Tulipa Oculus Solis, because each of their petals really look like bright colourful eyes. These two rare species brought to Cyprus long time ago - the soldiers of Alexander the Great brought bulbs from Central Asia upon the request of their commander. Later, during the Ottomans years, Turks cultivated these flowers for sale and exported them to various countries, including the Netherlands.
Hundreds of years later, these beautiful flowers got on the verge of going extinct - pesticides, used widely on cultivated fields, severely damaged bulbs and tulips faded. Luckily the Polemians in 2002 created a special Association for the conservation of wild varieties of tulips. Today these rare plants are not in danger. The organizers of the Tulip Festival, in their turn, also do their best to inform as many people as possible that rare flowers need protection.
